Today, we mark World Anaesthesia Day, celebrating anaesthetists and remembering the pioneers who made modern anaesthesia possible.

The History Behind World Anaesthesia Day

The story begins with Dr William T. G. Morton, an American dentist and physician. On October 16 1846 at Massachusetts General Hospital, he showed that surgery could be performed without pain. As a result, his breakthrough transformed medicine. Patients could undergo operations safely. Pain was no longer inevitable. Crucially, that moment laid the foundation for modern surgical care. Today, World Anaesthesia Day commemorates this achievement every year.

Since then, anaesthesia has evolved dramatically. Over time, techniques have become safer. Recovery has become faster. Anaesthetists now work in surgery, critical care, and pain management. Their skill saves lives every day. More than a reflection on history, World Anaesthesia Day is not just about history. It recognises progress, honours those who dedicate their lives to patient safety, and inspires future generations.

However, despite the progress and advancements, there is still a lot of work to be done. Even now, nearly 5 billion people globally lack access to safe anaesthesia. This highlights the need to continue raising awareness and promote education that ensures proper techniques are used and safety protocols are followed.

At Infomed, we recognise this dedication. To support anaesthetists in advancing their practice, our courses are specifically designed for Consultants and Career Grade Anaesthetists. Furthermore, the content is highly relevant to day-to-day practice and pitched at a level suitable for the Consultant General Anaesthetist. Through these courses, delegates receive a comprehensive and stimulating update across a range of topics, leaving with advanced knowledge and practical insights they can implement immediately.
