About the Course
  • An eyes-on and hands-on guide to the many aspects of Regional Anaesthesia that Anaesthetists have to deal
    with daily, answering the questions: how to do it and why.

  • A Faculty of experienced Consultant Anaesthetists from a variety of hospitals and backgrounds, from the UK and abroad, who will lecture and facilitate the workshops.

  • A well established practical course that builds on excellent feedback from attendees over past years.

Cadaveric Anatomy Workshops (Optional)

on Tuesday 9 Nov (pm) at St George’s Hospital, London:
Head and Neck; Upper Limb; Abdomen; Back; and Lower Limb.

Places limited: 3 attendees per demonstrator


Workshops
Learn about both Ultrasound and Landmark-guided techniques. Practise on a wide range of US scanners from several different suppliers, using live models and phantoms.

Places limited: 4 attendees per demonstrator
 

Live Demos
Observe and question, live via 2-way video/audio link, experienced Consultants performing at least ten blocks in Theatre.

Day 1: Tuesday 9 November 2010

Cadaveric Anatomy Workshops [Fully booked]

Led by Professor Vishy Mahadevan,
Professor of Surgical Anatomy and the Barbers’ Company
Reader in Anatomy at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, with demonstrators from the Faculty.

There are five Workshops.

1: Head and neck
2: Upper Limb
3: Abdomen
4: Back
5: Lower Limb

Attendees divide into five groups and rotate through each of the Workshops. Each Workshop lasts 20 minutes. Group numbers are limited to 3 attendees per demonstrator.


Day 2: Wednesday 10 November 2010

Workshops
 

Each Workshop lasts 50 minutes.
Each attendee attends six workshops:

  • Attendees new to Regional Anaesthesia and US attend workshops 1, 2 and 3, before moving on to three other workshops selected at the time of application.
     

  • Attendees with some previous experience of Regional Anaesthesia and US select any six of the nine Workshops to attend, though it is recommended that they attend the Level II workshops (workshops 4-9).

Attendees receive a workshops schedule on the day.

Workshop numbers are limited to 4 attendees per demonstrator.
 

Level 1 Workshops
For attendees new to RA and US

  1. Technology, Image Generation,Probe Handling
    and Needling
    Including opportunities to practise on phantoms.

  2. Brachial Plexus: Anatomy and Landmarks

  3. Lumbosacral Plexus:Anatomy and Landmarks
     

Level 2 Workshops
for attendees with previous experience in RA and US

  1. Upper Limb – above and around Clavicle
    Interscalene, Supraclavicular and Infraclavicular Blocks

  2. Upper Limb – below Clavicle

  3. Neuraxial US
    Paravertebral, Epidural and Lumbar Plexus Blocks

  4. Abdominal Wall
    Rectus, TAP, Transversalis Fascia and Ilioinguinal Blocks

  5. Femoral Sciatic Saphenous

  6. Popliteal and Ankle

Live demonstrations from theatre via video/audio link to the lecture theatre, featuring at least ten common procedures.
